I've just realised it's been ages since my last post, so a bit of a round up is needed.

First off, I've replaced the cars' rear wiper motor and it all now works spiffingly.  I replaced the blade as well at the time but it then got vandalised a couple of weeks afterwards so I've had to replace the wiper blade again.  Anyway it's all shiny.

Been watching Firefly over the past few weeks with Cathy.  I actually quite liked it.  All we've got left to watch now is Serenity, just to finish the whole Firefly thing off.  I live in hope of rumoured returns to the screen of this great little series.

As for Cathy.  Well we've been up and down a bit over the last couple of months.  Mostly the downs have been due to crap popping up in her life that's kind of needed to be dealt with.  On a lighter note though, we're going away this weekend, so I'm looking forward to that.

So in preparation for the weekend, I topped up the screenwash fluid (from empty) and then checked the oil level.  A dry dipsick wasn't a good look so I've put some oil into the engine and I'll be keeping an eye on levels over the coming weeks.  In July it will be going for a service, come hell or high water.  I may actually get the Poles at the garage down the road to clean the engine, if such a thing can be donw without it breaking.  The mileage cout tripped over 190,000 miles on my way to work yesterday, so she's doing well.

To top it all off, this afternoon I've discovered that my daughter and her mother aren't getting on, to the point of Kia moving to her Nan's.  Needless to say I'm not happy about this arrangement.  There's not a lot I can do from distance, but I just know things wouldn't be in this state had events not gone the way they did 12 years ago.

Oh well.

Car Stuff

Well, that was fruitful. I finally acquired a Haynes manual for the car this morning, from the shop on the end of the road, £7.50. Bargain.

So I've taken the tailgate to bits, and finally discovered why my rear wiper doesn't work.

There's no motor.

Yup. I found a motor in bits tucked away in one of the boot area pockets a while back. My best guess is that in the car's past someone removed it because it failed, and never refitted one. Now I'm hunting down a new or second hand motor. One email's gone already, which will hopefully be productive.

Next up, a quick clean of the bumpers. I've got some "make your bumpers and trim go back to their original shiny black" stuff to try out. I hope that's worth it.

Car Update

Well the new exhaust is on the car.  The difference is very noticeable, and the hole in the old box was bigger than I'd thought it was.  So the car is now nice and quiet.  I also got it cleaned, and redid the tyre pressures.  I thought they looked a little low but all the pressures were down around 26-27PSI when they should all be over 30, so they're all now around the 34 mark, much healthier I think.

So I finally took the car to get the exhaust looked at.  Kwik-Fit.  Yes, I know.  So anyway, they get it up on the ramp to look and see what parts they need, bearing in mind I've already told them it only needs the back box replacing due to the gaping hole in it.

Now apparently because the clanp that holds the back box onto the pipe and box in front of it is corroded, I now need to have the back half of the exhaust system replaced, for double the original £80 cost.  Originally it was £180, but they're ever so generously knocking off £20 from that, to leave me with a bill for £160.  That's bloody annoying.  Also I've got to take the car back tomorrow morning because they didn't have the spares available today.

It had better sound like a brand new car when I get it back or I'll be far less than chuffed.

Snow, and Stuff :)

Well, yes it's snowing here in London. There's tons of it. I'm off work till Saturday night so I'm going to miss the effects of the weather on the tubes. It is actually screwing public transport up no end but finally we've actually got the proper snow I've been waiting ages for. None of this namby pamby light dusting. Proper inches deep of snow.

I've taken some pictures, behind the cut.Collapse )

Saturday's Vagabonds was observed with a perspective I don't normally get. I spent it mostly sat in a corner, without going outside for a fag every 5 minutes as is my usual habit (aside from the fact it was bastard freezing outside) and without my usual random wandering about. I was as some may have noticed, otherwise occupied. Not saying much more than that for now, but things may be looking up a little. It's all good.

Don't get quite that level of drunk again, or at least not unti there's someone about who might appreciate it, it doesn't look too good.

To readers...no, nothing serious.  On Saturday, after having a very good night at Reptile, and while finishing said good night off at Slimelights, I hit a level of drunk beyond the really feelgood one I had on NYE at Vagabonds that actually let me drop my dancing inhibition.  Only slightly beyond, but it was out of the ordinary for me.

Perhaps the warm up drink before I go out may not be such a good idea after all.

A New Year

January 2nd, 2009 (10:55 am)

current location: home
current mood: blah

Well that's another year out of the way.  Vagabonds on NYE was brilliant, and much merriment was had by all.  I had a massive hangover for most of Jan 1 though, which wasn't anywhere near as much fun.  Yes, I know, drink lots of water.  I had about a glass and a half of water when I got home but it obviously wasn't enough.  Ah well.

So, on to another year.  There are two things I want to do this year.  Firstly, stay in work.  I know my job should be reasonably secure, especially as the company is contracted for at least the next decade for maintenance of the Underground.  However, even as secure as things look, these days I know nothing is garaunteed.  However with my skills, knowledge and experience on the systems I've worked on, which are (especially with the constant refurbishment) common through the network, if what I've got goes tits up, I should be able to go to any of the other LUL related subcontractors and get a job with any of them.  Being IRSE licenced helps a great deal there as well.

Secondly, I would very much like to be in a position where I am not going out to events full of couples as a single person.  Or more to the point I would like to stop being a single person.  This doesn't mean I'm going to divide myself in two and keep myself company.  No, that would be silly, and pointless.  The company (and all that comes with said company) of a nice woman of the female variety would be nice for a change.  I live in London.  This shouldn't be such a difficult thing to find, however I seem to have spent three years epically (which probably isn't how you spell that)  failing thus far.

I'll have to see what delights the year throws at me.  I live in hope, as always.

Went to give the car a start earlier and the battery is deader than a dead thing.  The central locking barely locked the car down again afterwards.

Checking for a replacement battery for it has produced quotes in the £90 region, something I did not need this month of all months.  However, it needs to be done, so first thing Friday I go to Halfords for a new battery, and taxi it back home.  Those things are bastard heavy and there's no way I'm going to try and walk from that Halfords up on the Mile End Road round to Stepney Green Tube station lugging the thing with me.

Car Issues

The tank is sprouting issues at me.  The list of things to attend to is now as follows:

Sort out the rear exhaust box.
Sort out the rear wiper.
A service might be nice.

And new for this week; the battery appears to be on it's last legs, and doesn't seem to be holding much of a charge overnight.  It's becoming a gamble as to whether there's enough charge in the battery to start the engine.  This is a very urgent fix, and I can see myself having to replace the battery as soon as I get paid on Friday.  I'm reasonably sure it's not the alternator, although next time I get into work I may have to test that with a meter.  If I've just run the engine, stop it and restart the car it fires up like the battery has a full charge.  It also looks like the battery is probably the original one or at worst it's a very old one, so might be due a replacement.

Once that's sorted, I'll be able to go get Bryce's birthday present then drive up to Banbury in the afternoon.

Hopefully I'll get back in time to make it for Inferno.

So earlier in the week I noticed a story on the BBC news website saying that they'd valued an object on the Antiques Roadshow at a million pounds for the first time in it's history.  They did however, keep it all secret squirrel as to what the item was.  So I tuned in to see.

A 15 year old concept statue of the Angel Of The North is not an antique.  And to my mind it's only worth £500 as scrap metal.  It's 100 kilos of brass.  It's not even the real Angel Of The North.  What a load of old rubbish.  As it happens it's not even owned by a member of the public, but by the local sodding council.  I think they hyped it up a bit, probably in some desperate attempt to get the viewing figures up.

Bloody rubbish.

Two In A Week?

current song: Various Youtube Randomness

Yup, the rarity of two posts in a week from me.  Must be something wrong, or I'm trying to stay awake and adjust back to days from nights again.  Most likely the latter.

Went shopping for Kia's present the other day, popped into the Stratford branch of HMV while I was passing.  While I was there I discovered that they don't stock Sorcerer on DVD, not yet anyway.  Band Of Brothers box set for £20 wasn't a bad deal, less than a third of what it was when it was first released.  Also bought Cloverfield and the Highlander Immortal Edition.  About time I had that on DVD.

On a more musical note, I must be mellowing.  I think I actually like the new Coldplay and Oasis stuff.  To be fair I've liked a lot of the older Oasis stuff but then the Gallagher brothers turned into a pair of obnoxious pricks, so I've largely disregarded them for the past few years.  The new Coldplay stuff just has a musical appeal I'm getting into.

While channel hopping the music channels on Sky this morning, as I tend to do when winding down after work, I found the new Britney Video.  I think the old pre-meltdown Britney is back as fit as ever, and the track's not half bad either.  I wouldn't kick her out of bed for farting at least.

New Met Album, Upcoming Birthdays.

Well I finally went and downloaded the new Metallica album, Death Magnetic, from HMV last week.  I'd seen varying opinions on it.  Having listened to it, I can safely say I like it.  It is back to the old Metallica with good, well structured yet decently flowing songs.  None of that disjointed St. Anger crap.  Well worth listening to.  Hetfield's vocals have changed over the years (listen to Madonna, her voice has changed as she's aged), so a lot of it sounds Load-ish, but mixed in with that are hints of And Justice and Ride The Lightning.  My one niggle about it would be The Unforgiven III.  It starts off sounding very prominsing, but degerenates into sounding like another Load reject track, which is quite sad.

Overall though, a very good album, with the band being back on form, at least for now.

It's also that time of year again when my kids have their birthdays.  Kia is 12 on Tuesday.  I think my perception is warped by the distance between us but she's grown a lot lately, and I struggle to believe she's 12 already.  It doesn't seem that long ago that she was a baby, but at the same time it does.  She's going to be tall, like her mother, if not taller.  I don't suppose it will seem that long before I'm offering opinions on her boyfriends.  Time flies as they say.

I'm getting too old for this shit, as usual.

So there I am, last night, having just patched Eve Online and just pottering about on two of the accounts, when all of a sudden the monitors go blank and shut down.  Yes, both of them, simultaneously, and with no error messages or warnings whatsoever.  Dead screens.

Oh, poo.

After a small amount of prodding, poking, turning it off and on again, the usual, it turns out the graphics card has completely gone the way of the Norwegian Blue.  Bugger.

So cue mad dash out this morning to get a baseline replacement for it.  Now it wasn't top line card (GeForce 7600GS) so I was after the cheapest NVidia card I could lay my hands on.  The lovely people at Yo-Yo Tech furnished me with a shiny new GeForce 8500GT card with 1GB onboard RAM.  Nice.  £40.  Even nicer.

It's all installed, and thankfully it's proven that the old graphics card and not any important parts on the motherboard had failed.  So far so good, with all the latest drivers and software installed.  Might have to see how it copes with Eve, although I think I'll see if I can monitor it's core temperatures for a short while, just to make sure that Eve isn't what killed the old card.

Just in time for the The Gathering this bank holiday weekend, I now own a car.  Yay!  It's the Volvo 740 I've been borrowing from Sinbad for the past couple of years, so I know its' service history and all of the quirks that come with it.  Excellent stuff.  It's old but it goes from A to B without trying to fake it's own death.  When I get back from the G I've got to go buy a parking permit for it, so that I can park it where I live.  Bum.  Oh well, one of the consequences of living in London with a car.

I should now be able to get out and visit various places and people a lot easier now, and at least now I no longer have to worry about hiring a car for the main LT events any more, as I have been in the past.  The other bonus about owning the car is that I don't have to give it back to anyone by a certain time, which is very yayworthy.

Anyway, packing, and maybe a little bit of sorting out of Eve character skill trains to do before I head off for a potentially early night....the last for about a week!

The new version of War Of The Worlds, starring Tom Cruise was on telly the other night.  Now I'd not seen it before, so I sat and watched it from beginning to end.

Now apart from pretty much a single technical sticking point that I had with one scene in the film, I actually thought it was quite good.  I've never read the original book, so I base all my opinions on the Jeff Wayne WotW album, which I must say is bloody awesome, as I rediscovered it in my CD collection recently.  Anyway, back to the film.

It has all the main elements of the story, despite having been modernised, a tricky thing to do in this instance.  The invasion, the fleeing, the guy who thinks we can fight them from underground, and the bacteria which kill the alien invaders off.  About the only thing which was missing was the priest, but I suspect that was more influenced by Cruises' Scientology beliefs than anything else.  Either way I actually thought was a bloody good film, all told.  Well worth the time taken to watch it.

I'm not sure I see what all the criticism around it's release was about.  Then again my views and those of film critics differ greatly.  While almost everyone else on the planet was off watching the Epic Fail that was Titanic, I watched what everyone else thought was an Epic Fail, but which I actually much enjoyed, that post apocalyptic Costner film, The Postman.

I have this bad habit of watching a film because I want to, and because I like what it's about, not because the mainstream, Hollywood bribed so-called critics say it's a good film, or otherwise.  I also watch a film for what it is, not for the book it was written against, or whatever.  Unless I find it to be a crappy film, I won't bother picking holes in it.  If it's that good I normally won't notice, and thus don't care anyway.

Anyway, I'm off to shoot internet spaceships for the evening.

Now I've woken up I've still got to get used to the way my mouth feels.  There's the slightlest soreness both nothing painful per se, and I have this gap in my teeth that I'm not supposed to feel with my toungue at least for a few days.

Having been sedated today though does mean that I'm not working tomorrow, which is nice.
